Spot Tech Support Scams & Fake Pop-ups
Scammers pretend to be Microsoft, your internet provider or your bank to get into your computer and your money. Here's how to spot fake pop-ups and phone calls, and what to do if you've already let someone in.
Fake warning pop-ups
A web page suddenly fills the screen with a warning that your computer is infected or locked, often with a loud beeping noise and a phone number to call. It's just a web page. Your computer isn't infected, and calling the number puts you through to a scammer.
- Real Windows warnings never include a phone number Microsoft won't ask you to call them.
- Close the browser Press Alt + F4. If that doesn't work, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, select the browser and click End task.
- Don't restore the pages When you open the browser again, don't reopen the tabs from last time.
Fake phone calls
The caller says they're from Microsoft, your internet provider or your bank, and that your computer has a virus, your internet is about to be cut off, or someone has hacked your account. Warning signs:
- They called you Microsoft never calls out of the blue about problems with your computer.
- They want remote access They ask you to install a program such as AnyDesk, TeamViewer or Quick Assist, or to visit a website.
- They want money or bank details For a "fix", a "refund", gift cards or a transfer.
- They're in a hurry They say something bad will happen unless you act right now.
Just hang up. If you're worried the call might be real, call the company back on a number from their website or your bill, not one the caller gave you.
Never let a stranger into your computer. Only allow remote access for someone you contacted yourself, such as your own IT support.
